I believe that smoking is a global public health problem that not only affects the health of the smoker, but also has a serious impact on the surrounding population. Nicotine is the main ingredient in tobacco and is highly addictive. This blog of mine will delve into smoking and its effects on health, the mechanism of action of nicotine, and the importance of quitting smoking.
From the video I can conclude that smoking is one of the main causes of many serious diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), smoking causes more than 8 million deaths each year. These deaths are mainly due to multiple diseases caused by smoking. Firstly smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and smokers have more than 20 times the risk of lung cancer than non-smokers. Second smoking increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. The chemicals in tobacco damage the lining of blood vessels and promote the development of atherosclerosis.
Third smokers are susceptible to respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis and asthma. Fourthly smoking is also closely related to a number of cancers such as oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, stomach and bladder. Fifth smoking can lead to reproductive health problems in both men and women, infertility in men and pregnancy complications in women.
Nicotine is the main addictive ingredient in tobacco and its effects on the brain and body are complex and widespread. When nicotine is inhaled, it rapidly enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, causing a range of physical and psychological responses. Dopamine is released to stimulate the brain's reward system, producing feelings of pleasure and relaxation. This feeling of pleasure motivates smokers to smoke repeatedly, leading to addiction. Nicotine affects the release of a variety of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, norepinephrine and serotonin, which are involved in regulating functions such as mood, attention and memory. And long-term use of nicotine can cause the body to become dependent on it. Withdrawal from nicotine can cause a range of withdrawal symptoms, making you more susceptible to anxiety and depression. Although nicotine can temporarily relieve stress and anxiety, long-term use can lead to mood swings. And studies have shown that smoking is associated with cognitive decline, including memory loss and poor concentration. Long-term smokers have a higher risk of developing dementia in old age. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance, and its addictive properties make it difficult for smokers to quit. Addiction not only brings about physical dependence, but also leads to psychological dependence, which increases the smoker's stress and anxiety.
So not only does quitting smoking improve ours health, but the health benefits of quitting smoking are significant and quick. No matter how many years a smoker has smoked, quitting will improve their health. From my search for information, I found that 20 minutes after quitting smoking, heart rate and blood pressure begin to return to normal; 12 hours after quitting, carbon monoxide levels in the blood drop to normal; and 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting, circulatory and lung function improves significantly. One year after quitting, the risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half; five years after quitting, the risk of stroke is reduced to the level of non-smokers; 10 years after quitting, the death rate from lung cancer is about half that of continuing smokers; and 15 years after quitting, the risk of coronary heart disease is comparable to that of non-smokers.
Quitting smoking can be challenging, but with the right strategies and support, many smokers can quit successfully. Nicotine replacement therapy can be used, and the use of chewing gum can help ease withdrawal symptoms and increase the success of quitting.
The health risks of smoking and nicotine are undeniable. Although quitting is not easy, smokers can successfully quit and improve their health by understanding the mechanism of action of nicotine and utilizing a variety of cessation resources. Governments and society should strengthen tobacco control policies and health education to reduce the public health impact of tobacco use. Quitting smoking is not only an investment in one's health, but also a contribution to one's family and society.
